Children who are more connected with and aware of their emotions, are better able to self-regulate, focus, and control their impulses. By encouraging expression and communication of emotions, we can help them to make these connections and increase their emotional awareness. They are also able to get the message that we care and want to hear about their feelings.
A fun way to practice mindfulness of emotions is through an Emotions Jar. We have a "Happy Jar" at home, in which we identify at least one thing that we were happy about throughout the day. Doing this during dinner, allows us to talk more about our day and to make connections between events, thoughts, and emotions. After the jar is full, we empty it and review all of the things that we had been happy about. Sometimes those things are easy to forget, but they are awfully nice to remember. I've seen this done a number of ways, such as having a separate jar for different emotions. Get creative and have fun!
